You can recover your gamertag in the sign in window if i remember correctly, otherwise just Google Xbox 360 recover account or Xbox 360 recover gamertag. It sounds to me like either the update has screwed things up somehow or your onboard flash memory card has failed (it isn't common but if that is the case it isn't too serious as they are rather cheap to replace)

Does anyone know a way to retrieve the data successfully and without permanent damage to the XBOX? We have already tried disconnecting and reconnecting the hard disc physically with a powered down unplugged XBOX
