This 1) improves extraction, 2) prevents dilution by eliminating plain water going into the cup, 3) helps prevent blooming coffee from depositing grinds on the brewhead, and 4) reduces the chance of overflow. I have never succeeded in getting it clean despite forcing damp paper towels down from the top or up through the hole, and some of this residue ends up in every cup

I just used my mouth, but if you're a clean-freak you may want to complicate the process by using a pump.Once the reservoir is empty, plug the tubes back in. Getting the bottom plate in place was a little tough and so was getting the arm cover on in the right position.Since the machine had claimed it needed descaling, I had most recently had vinegar in the system

And while she cleaned the machine and would stick the reservoir tank into her dish washer from time to time, mold still formed in the tank by the floater, fill indicator. There are some crevices in there that I guess because of shape of the reservoir make it difficult for a dish washer to properly clean, it was pretty gross and filled with mold when I discovered it

The Keurig keeps at least a cup of water inside the brewer at all times to provide instant hot water which enables the brewer to make gourmet coffee by the cup in less than a minute. To keep your brewer running efficiently, or when storing the brewer for a period of time, it is necessary to drain the water not just out of the reservoir, but from the interior of the machine as well

However, it appears that the problem may be related more to the quality of tap water used than any other factor. If you use well water it will be full of a variety of minerals including calcium which can build up within the thin water lines and filter of the Keurig coffee maker
