Renting a car probably isn't the best mode of transportation, as traffic is heavy and the roads are packed with disorienting street signs and pedestrians. From the slopes of Corcovado Mountain, you'll admire the striking 125-foot tall Christ the Redeemer, who overlooks Rio's pristine beaches flanked by sun-seekers

Occasionally you may encounter a chiseler who wants to overcharge by setting the meter at "2" when it should be at "1." If the driver sets the meter for 2 and it should be "1" you can opt to tell him to set it to "1," or get out and find an honest driver. (You should only try this when you arrive at an upscale hotel manned by a doorman and your bags are out of the cab.) DECEMBER ADVISORY: Brazilians have a tradition of getting a 13th month of salary at the end of the year

The public transportation system has covered all the major sights along their paths throughout the various districts, making them an efficient mode to tour the city. Hand-planted in the 19th century to recover the damage caused by extensive coffee plantations, the wildlife park population includes many insects, ocelots, birds, howler monkeys and other endangered species known only to the Amazon basin

There are still great specialty shops: for musical instruments (Casa Oliveira), surfwear (Draco), hand-crafted jewelry (Maria Oiticica), books (Livraria da Travessa) and excellent bargains at the Target-like Lojas Americanas chain, particularly on CDs and DVDs. Cristo Redentor does a little tour guiding on the side, the left arm pointing to the older north of Rio and the giant soccer stadium, Maracana, while the right arm waves to the Rodrigo Freitas Lagoa and the beaches of the Zona Sul

Do keep in mind that some online companies are not based in Rio and will therefore subcontract work to others, which may or may not affect the quality and safety of the transport arrangment. For those travelling to Rio for Carnival it's worth using a company that allows you to book and pay in advance, and to try and pay as much in advance as possible as prices tend to increase a few weeks before Carnival. Radio Taxis, such as Rio Airport Transfer and others are usually the blue, green, or white taxis and they do cost a little more than the typical yellow taxi

What is a big deal is the length of the beach and the amazing views of Rio and the famous Sugar Loaf, and while the crowds do kind of suck at the same time it makes for a vibrant culture filled day. The bikinis are tiny and the girls who wear them are often stunning! There are always several games of volleyball going on, and of football too, with even the youngest boys showing some incredible skills with the ball

To use a city map, you will need a navigator in the front passenger seat! It's easier to leave the city directly from the airport than to drive down to Ipanema or Copacabana. It's best to write the name and address down ahead of time for the driver, "Me deixa no hotel o na esquina da Rua XXXX com XXXX or favor? ("Please drop off at the hotel, or at the corner of XXXX street and XXXX?")

These companies have nicer cars with air-con, alloys, often tinted windows etc and if you pre-book through a site like Rio Airport Transfer then they'll generally meet you after you've collected your luggage at the airport ands show you to your car. They provided the usual good service from the airport, which is much better than a regular Rio de Janeiro taxi I might add, and the following day I was met by an English speaking driver by the name of Alberto who spent the following 2 days transporting me around the city
